Production Assistant

The person who makes the lead photographer faster. Move the gear, set the lights, hold the mark, learn the craft.

Where
Detroit and Howell studio, events across Michigan, some travel.
When
Event days, plus studio days for kit prep and testing.

What you’ll do

  • Load, set up, and strike the studio kit with the lead. Every cable taped, nothing dangling.
  • Move the light where the lead points. Hold the reflector. Manage the line and the mark.
  • Keep batteries charging, cards backed up, and the kit ready for the next person.
  • Shadow, then own the setup. This is how our photographers start.

Who you are

  • Curious about lighting and photography. You want to learn by doing it for real.
  • Strong and steady. Cases up to 80 lbs, long days on your feet.
  • A “send-done” person. Ask once, it gets done, you say when it’s done.

Not for you if

  • You need constant direction.
  • You’d rather watch than carry.

What it pays

  • $25/hr to start (our training rate), paid every two weeks through Gusto.
  • $35/hr once you can run a setup on your own. In writing before your first event.

How hiring works

The full process
  1. Step 1

    Apply

Fill out the short form on the role you want. Tell us where you’re based, when you’re available, and what you do for fun. Photographers: send your work. We reply to every applicant.

  2. Step 2

    Phone screen

A real conversation, not a script. What do you do now and why? Why us? When are you available, and how far will you travel?

  3. Step 3

    References

If we like the conversation we ask for three references from current or past coworkers, and we actually call them: what was it like to work with you, and would they hire you again?

  4. Step 4

    Offer in writing

Role, responsibilities, and pay rate, in writing.

  5. Step 5

    Onboarding and training

Paid training: the videos, a quiz and a hands-on day at the studio. You read and sign The Standard before your first event.

  6. Step 6

    Shadow an event

Work an event as an apprentice.

  7. Step 7

    Work

    First event, then the next.
